North Kingstown¹s NFL FLAG football program was established in 2008 and run through the North Kingstown (RI) Recreation Department for its first five years. Al Southwick and his team at the NK Rec Department were instrumental in mentoring and growing the new league. The inaugural season fielded 80 kids across all age divisions and by 2012, enrollment had climbed to more than 320 youth participants. Such growth would be impossible without a sizeable and committed group of parent volunteers. Thanks to all who have helped make North Kingstown Flag Football such a popular league with both kids and parents.
The league is open to North Kingstown boys and girls ages 8-14, determined by the player's age as of September 1. The league is comprised of teams in three divisions: 8-9 year olds, 10-11 year olds, and 12-14 year olds. Practices and games are at Ryan Park on Oak Hill Road, with the first practice held the first week of August. Weekly games are held under the lights at Ryan Park during September and October. The 8-9 year-old teams will play on Thursday nights and the 10-11 and 12-14 year-olds on Friday nights.
NFL Flag Football provides young players a fun and exciting opportunity to engage in a non-contact, continuous action sport while learning lessons in teamwork and sportsmanship. Kids learn the fundamentals of flag football, including passing, catching, and playing defense in a five-on-five format. Coaching, officiating, and other support roles are filled by parent and other adult volunteers. There is always a need for help in all of these areas.
